چکیده
We obtained high quality spectra of 135 stars of spectral types F and later and derived " overall " broadening functions in selected wavelength regions utilizing a Least Squares Deconvolution (LSD) procedure. Precision values of the projected rotational velocity v sin i were derived from the first zero of the Fourier transformed profiles and the shapes of the profiles were analyzed for effects of differential rotation. The broadening profiles of 70 stars rotating faster than v sin i = 45 km s −1 show no indications of multiplicity nor of spottedness. In those profiles we used the ratio of the first two zeros of the Fourier transform q 2 /q 1 to search for deviations from rigid rotation. In the vast majority the profiles were found to be consistent with rigid rotation. Five stars were found to have flat profiles probably due to cool polar caps, in three stars cuspy profiles were found. Two out of those three cases may be due to extremely rapid rotation seen pole on, only in one case (v sin i = 52 km s −1) solar-like differential rotation is the most plausible explanation for the observed profile. These results indicate that the strength of differential rotation diminishes in stars rotating as rapidly as v sin i > ∼ 50 km s −1 .

Differential Rotation in F Stars
Differential rotation can be detected in single line profiles of stars rotating more rapidly than about v sin i = 10 km s with the Fourier transform technique. This allows to search for differential rotation in large samples to look for correlations between differential rotation and other stellar parameters. I analyze the fraction of differentially rotating stars as a function of color, rotatio...
متن کاملRotation- and temperature-dependence of stellar latitudinal differential rotation
More than 600 high resolution spectra of stars of spectral type F and later have been obtained in order to search for signatures of differential rotation in line profiles. In 147 stars the rotation law could be measured; 28 of them are found to be differentially rotating. Comparison to rotation laws in stars of spectral type A reveals that differential rotation sets in at the convection boundar...
متن کاملRapid Rotation, Active Nests of Convection and Global-scale Flows in Solar-like Stars
In the solar convection zone, rotation couples with intensely turbulent convection to build global-scale flows of differential rotation and meridional circulation. Our sun must have rotated more rapidly in its past, as is suggested by observations of many rapidly rotating young solar-type stars. Here we explore the effects of more rapid rotation on the patterns of convection in such stars and t...
متن کاملConvection in Oblate Solar-Type Stars
We present the first global 3D simulations of thermal convection in the oblate envelopes of rapidly-rotating solar-type stars. This has been achieved by exploiting the capabilities of the new Compressible High-ORder Unstructured Spectral difference (CHORUS) code. We consider rotation rates up to 85% of the critical (breakup) rotation rate, which yields an equatorial radius that is up to 17% lar...
متن کاملAcoustic oscillations in rapidly rotating polytropic stars I. Effects of the centrifugal distortion
A new non-perturbative method to compute accurate oscillation modes in rapidly rotating stars is presented. In this paper, the effect of the centrifugal force is fully taken into account while the Coriolis force is neglected. This assumption is valid when the time scale of the oscillation is much shorter than the inverse of the rotation rate and is expected to be suitable for high radial order ...
